	August 8: Call to Action! This Thursday, August 9, the Contra Costa Community Partners (CCCP) will meet to decide how to spend $19 million the county will receive from the State. Sheriff Livingston has submitted a budget for $11 million of that amount—most of it going to expand the West County Detention Facility and hire more assistant sheriffs. Instead of implementing the evidenced-based programs that have been shown to break the cycle of offenders, the Sheriff is proposing to expand the law enforcement system that has produced the existing situation. We need your body! CCISCO is asking everyone to attend the CCCP meeting on Thursday, Aug. 9, at 8 a.m. The "slam dunk" vote that was denied the Sheriff at last month's meeting may be taken at this meeting. We need to have a BIG presence. Let them see that we're not going to go away—and we're growing! Please contact Jane Middleton ( This email address is being protected from spambots. August 15 Interfaith Prayer Vigil for Immigrant Detainees at the West County Detention Center, 5555 Giant Highway, Richmond, CA 94806. UUCB, with Natalie DaSilva coordinating, will be “host” of this month’s vigil. Come for singing, stories, and to be there for those held inside and for their families and friends outside. August 18 Annual Picnic at Freestone from 11am-3pm. Contact a member of the Freestone Committee for more information! August 19 Immigration Justice Education from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., Fireside Room. Join us for a showing of the 2009 award-winning documentary film "9500 Liberty", about the struggle over immigration in Prince William County, Virginia. It tells the story of how concerned citizens responded to an Arizona-style law implemented in that county in 2007, after becoming aware of the impact the law had on the local economy. 	Ends Statement Survey As the term implies, an End Statement describes an “end state.” It is an expression of hope and intention, a destination UUCB continuously works toward. Unlike the Ten Commandments, Ends are not written in stone. They are constantly revised and fine-tuned, based on your input, to reflect your values, hopes, and expectations for this church. If you are a member of UUCB, you are among what Policy Governance calls “moral owners” of this church. The Taskforce on Linkage needs your help. Please respond to the questionnaire (recently mailed with your pledge statement) and place it in the Ends Feedback Drop Box in the Atrium on the Info Table outside of the Office. OR go to www.uucb.org and in the menu at the top, click “ABOUT UUCB,” then click the “GOVERNANCE” option. In addition to Safeway, there are many local grocery stores that will donate to UUCB through the eScrip program, including Diablo Foods, Piedmont Grocery, and Pak 'n Save. Also, UUCB can receive donations via eScrip for your online purchases from any of hundreds of stores. Land Use Survey: The congregational meeting included information about exploring development of the land below the fire road. This would be for development that fits with our values and potentially expands our mission in the community.
