vision
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley is a welcoming and vibrant congregation. We joyously support spiritual development guided by individual faith, reason, and conscience. We are committed to serving one another, our church, and the local and global communities. We foster a spirit of generosity and trust that encourages care for our church home, and affirms diversity and relationships consistent with Unitarian Universalist principles.
social-justice
The great purpose in life is to grow a soul, taught Unitarian minister William Ellery Channing (1780- 1842). All of us are on life journeys growing our souls. The natural outpouring of growing a soul is justice-making. Spirituality without social expression is empty; social justice without spirituality is hollow. Since September 11, many of us are more aware of the fragility of life. How do we want to live our lives? Life is short; life is our chance both to grow a soul and what is called in the Jewish tradition "to repair the world." You can't do one without the other. Here at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley, we encourage one another to bring our selves and our gifts into social expression, not out of guilt for all that is hurting in the world, but out of our growing love and our recognition of what we have to bring.
worship

Worship is at the heart of our community. Worship refreshes us and we take a deep breath and rest from our daily lives. Worship refreshes when it comforts us in difficult times, when it celebrates with us our joys, and when it challenges us and names what has been avoided. Worship reminds us of who we are, what we can become, how we want to live, what we hope to give to the community and the world.

In our worship services, we laugh and cry and are reminded of what is deepest and dearest. Worship engages our minds and hearts and bodies with the wisdom from the world.s religions, the words and deeds of prophetic and poetic women and men, experiences of life’s twists and turns and transcending mystery and wonder. Together we reverence living and dying, mark joy and pain and promise. We celebrate hope and liberation, recovery and possibility.

welcome

A warm welcome to you. Worship is central to the life of this community. Worship reminds us of who we are, what we can become, how we want to live, what we hope to give to the community and the world. Our liberal religious community's programs and events support people's life-long growth and learning, encourage each person's unique contributions to the world, and create and celebrate human community. We welcome young and old, families and singles, all the colors and cultures of the human race, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and straight people.

We believe each person has a share of the truth and we need one another to grow whole. Our differing gifts and strengths join together to make a vibrant, loving community. Together we reverence living and dying, mark joy and pain and promise. We hope you will visit the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley. May you find the community of your longing.

You Are Welcome Here!

We need not think alike to love alike. Most of the members of UUCB were not born UU. Ours is a chosen faith. We come from many other faith traditions—and from no religion at all. We come in search of answers to questions like these...

  • How can I lead a deeper spiritual life?
  • How can I be engaged with something beyond day to day, secular life?
  • How can I be part of a community of meaning and purpose?

For those of you already Unitarian Universalist, we bid you warm welcome and offer you a place in which to continue exploring your spiritual path.
