From Our Co-MinistersMay 2008 May! Both of us grew up with the tradition of May baskets. Little baskets brimming with flowers were left on friends' doorsteps. The baskets were often handmade from construction paper and pipe cleaners and the flowers were ones you picked. You would sneak up to the house, ring the door bell, leave the basket, run and hide. From behind a tree or a fence, you would watch the moment when the door opened and your friend found the surprise. May baskets were about friendship, discovery, joy and the abundance of spring. We feel some of that same exuberance, playfulness, and joy as we anticipate upcoming activities here at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley. Here are a few- Sunday, May 4, 12 noon - 3 pm is the Fiesta Cinco de Mayo celebration. The goods and services, the outings, parties, and meals auctioned can connect you with people in this community so as to make new friends or deepen old ones. Sunday, May 11 Music Sunday. Your spirit will lift with beautiful music at the 9:00 and the 11:00 services. Saturday, May 17, 9:30 am -12:00 pm we'll watch Dr. Shakti Butler's film "Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible," a documentary featuring the stories of people who have worked to gain insight into what it means to challenge racism both in themselves and in institutions. We'll have small group and large group sharing. Saturday evening, May 31 is our annual prom, Swingin’ at the Casbah! Come single, come partnered. Dine and dance and enjoy the entertainment! Sunday, June 8 Religious Education Day, Field Day, and Green Festival combine for intergenerational festivity. There will be a Farmer's Market, a celebration of the installation of our solar panels, a low carbon challenge, a great summer picnic and lots of fun and games. And there's so much more! UUCB is brimming with an abundance of life-giving activities. Come open the door and make a joyful discovery. We are meant to savor and save the world and what better place to do it than here together! See you at UUCB.
