From Our Co-Ministers

July 2006

TIME OUT: There’s something about the summer’s warmth and longer daylight that invites a slower pace, reflection, and savoring.

During the year, someone gave us a CD: Meditation and Self-Care Ideas for Busy People. We haven’ t had time to listen to it; the CD is still in its plastic wrap.

The story goes that a Buddhist monk visiting New York was told by his Western host that they could save ten minutes by making a complex transfer in the subway at Grand Central Station. When they emerged from the underground in Central Park, the monk sat down on a bench. His host wanted to know what he was doing. “I thought we should enjoy the ten minutes,” the monk replied. Enjoy ten minutes. Sit out of doors and watch the sun set or the fog roll in or the clouds glide by the moon.

Enjoy ten minutes. Sit down with a family member or a friend and really look at him or her and share some stories.

Enjoy ten minutes. Life is full of humor. Look around until you observe something amusing, maybe even something that makes you laugh out loud.

Sit in the pew and breathe expansively, notice the beauty of the music, the flowers, the faces of those around you. As you leave the service, greet someone new to you and be curious. Learn some of the most rewarding and pleasing things he or she has done. Relax your shoulders and smile. Enjoy, enjoy.

Take a few moments and record a dream or write about a particular time in your life. Set aside any thoughts of how it should be written and just write. Who have you been and who are you yet to become?

When you are saving time, enjoy the time you save.

Our lives will always know pain and promise, sorrows and joy, hardships, challenges, accomplishments, and hope. There will always be more to do than we can get done.

May the turning season, the summer’s warm, the lingering light offer you some time this month to be free of rush and hurry. Start with ten minutes.
